Your Guide to Planning the Ultimate Snowmobiling Trip

There’s nothing quite like a snowmobiling trip to a beautiful destination with all your whole family or with a bunch of your friends.

Spending your days snowmobiling across varied terrain in a winter wonderland and your nights in a cozy lodge in front of a roaring fire is the stuff dreams are made of. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a multi-day snowmobiling adventure knows that trips like these are extra special. Snowmobiling trips are experiences that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

If you want to plan the ultimate snowmobile trip, there are a lot of factors to consider if you want to make it perfect.

You’ll need to decide where to go, where to stay, and who you want to go along with you. You will need to think about how much you want to spend and how long you want to go. You’ll also need to think about things like snowmobile rentals, in some cases and whether or you want to go along with existing snowmobile tours or go off on your own.

To learn more about how to plan a fantastic snowmobiling trip, read on. We’ll tell you everything you need to think about and plan to have the best adventure of your life.

Who Will Join You?

The first thing you should do when planning a snowmobiling trip is to figure out who you wish to bring along with you. A snowmobiling trip with your family will be much different than a snowmobiling trip with your friends, so keep that in mind.

Will you bring people of all ages, or do you just want your trip to include adults? Should you only invite people who are experienced snowmobilers or are you willing to bring beginners along with you as well? Do you want to bring people who all know each other already, or do you want to ignite some new friendships by inviting a mixed group?

The people you bring on your snowmobiling trip can make or break your trip. No matter who you bring, there’s a very good chance that you will all have a wonderful time, but you don’t want to bring someone who you know will complain much of the time or someone who will try to boss everyone around, either. Choose your companions wisely.

How Long Will You Go?

How long do you want your snowmobiling trip to be? You may be amazed by how much fun you can pack into a long weekend, but you may prefer the more relaxing pace of a full week vacation instead.

You’ll also need to take travel time into consideration. If your snowmobiling trip is a short distance from your home, you could drive to the location in the morning and ride all afternoon that same day. However, if your snowmobiling trip destination will require a ride on an airplane, then you may need to add a day of transit on both ends of your trip when planning.

Don’t forget how tiring snowmobiling can be. It seems like such a simple sport; after all, you’re just sitting and riding around. But any snowmobile enthusiast knows that a day of riding is often quite exhausting, so you may want to add in some extra days for hot tubbing and general relaxation before you head back home as well.

Where Will You Go?

Perhaps one of the most difficult things to decide when planning the ultimate snowmobiling trip is your destination. There are so many great places around the country and beyond it to ride snowmobiles. Every destination offers something a little different to visitors, s it’s important that you do your research in this area.

Canada

There are dozens of excellent snowmobiling destinations in Canada; you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Whether you are drawn to the Canadian Rockies, the coastal regions of British Columbia, the central plains of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ottawa, or to the eastern maritime provinces, you’ll find snowmobiling adventures plentiful everywhere.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that Canada gets a great deal of snow and that that snow sticks around for much of the year. If you really love snowmobiling, you can even take a snowmobile trip in the summertime if you go far enough north.

The United States

The United States is full of fantastic snowmobiling destinations from coast to coast. Of course, you won’t get much snow in the south, but almost anywhere north of the middle of the country gets enough snow in the winter for snowmobiling adventures.

Many people flock to the Yellowstone National Park area for snowmobiling in the winter. Much of the park is closed to cars during the winter months, and its roads are taken over by snowmobilers. If you’re looking for quiet wilderness and maybe even some wildlife, then Yellowstone is a great choice.

Northern Idaho is known for long winters, mountain peaks, and well-groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails. Many small towns in this area cater to snowmobilers and will welcome you and your companions with open arms.

Northwestern Colorado and northeastern Utah are also well-known snowmobiling meccas. This part of the country gets lots and lots of snow, and you’ll be amazed by the mountain views.

If you like the northeast part of our nation, then you’ll love snowmobiling in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Although the mountains are not as big as they are out west, the hills and valleys of this region offer exciting terrain for snowmobilers of all levels.

Finally, many people don’t realize how perfect the northern midwest is for snowmobiling activities. Thousands of people visit Wisconsin and Minnesota for this activity each year, and many choose to incorporate ice fishing and cross country skiing into their visits to this area as well.

These are just a few of the great snowmobiling destinations to consider in the United States, but this certainly doesn’t include all of them. You may also want to consider upstate New York, northern California, Alaska, or the Dakotas to name a few additional options.

International

Your options don’t stop there. North America isn’t the only continent that loves snowmobiling. Why not take your group abroad so you can explore an entirely different nation and culture from your sled?

You might be surprised to find out that there are snowmobiles and snowmobiling enthusiasts all over the world. You can plan your next snowmobiling trip in Japan, Argentina, Switzerland, or even Siberia! The possibilities are endless.

Some people return to the same snowmobiling destinations year after year, but, as you can see, you could go somewhere different each and every year and never run out of options.

Where Will You Stay?

Once you’ve settled on a destination for your snowmobiling trip, it’s time to decide where you will stay. Do you want to stay at a big resort or would you prefer to stay at a small lodge? Is your group large enough to book an entire place for yourselves, or will you need to stay somewhere with other vacationers?

Many large and small accommodation options offer snowmobile tours that you can join right outside their doors. Other accommodations will require you to travel to another site to enjoy snowmobiling. Which will your group prefer?

You might also consider renting a private home for your group for your snowmobiling trip. If the property is large enough, you can perhaps snowmobile right there; if you don’t own your own snowmobiles, most places that offer snowmobile rentals will drop off some vehicles for you. Or, your group can travel from your rental house to a place that offers snowmobiling instead.

There are so many options for accommodations in every snowmobiling destination. You may feel overwhelmed by all of the choices available to you. However, take your time, ask your companions what they want, and read online reviews, and you’ll soon find the perfect place for you.

What Should You Bring?

You’ve likely packed for a vacation before, so you’ll want to bring along all the things you normally bring with you. However, packing for a snowmobiling adventure also requires a few extra things as well.

First and foremost, you’ll want to bring a lot of warm clothes. But, be smart and bring clothes that you can layer easily. You’ll find that you get warm fast when riding a snowmobile, so you’ll want to be able to shed layers to stay comfortable as your body heats up. You’ll also need warm socks, gloves, a hat, a helmet, and good boots. Your outermost layer of everything should be waterproof.

Even with a waterproof exterior layer, your clothes will likely get quite wet on the first day from both sweat and humidity, so you’ll want to bring enough warm clothes so you have enough to wear on subsequent days as well.

Don’t forget to bring comfortable clothes for relaxing after your day outside, too. You might even want to bring your favourite slippers for shuffling around the lodge. If you plan to go out to dinner, you’ll need a nice outfit or two also, and don’t forget your swimsuit for the hot tub and sauna.

What Should You Pack for a Day of Snowmobiling?

You’ll also want to be prepared when it comes time to get on your snowmobile. If you are taking a guided snowmobile tour, your guide will spend some time talking about snowmobile safety and making sure that you and your group are prepared for anything. On the other hand, if you are going out on your own with your group, all of the safety preparation will be entirely up to you.

You’ll take to make sure that you have towing straps in case something breaks or if you need a tow, and you’ll also want to make sure you carry some spare parts with you as well such as belts, spark plugs, and zip ties to repair things. You should make sure that every vehicle has enough gas for the route you have planned. Bring snacks and water and make sure everyone has a lighter in case they get stuck and they need to make a fire, too.

Most of all, you’ll want to make sure that your group leader has maps and that everyone has a cell phone or other communication device in case of an emergency. Make sure communication devices are fully charged and put them in plastic bags to make sure they stay dry and functional for the whole trip.

The Ultimate Snowmobiling Trip Awaits

It may seem overwhelming at first, but if you take it step by step and give yourself plenty of time to plan, you will be able to plan the best trip with your friends or family that any of you have ever had.

It’s likely best to do your planning in the order that it was presented in this post. Decide who you will go with, how long you want to go, where you want to go, and where you want to stay.
