Best Electric Dirt Bikes for Kids

April 17th, 2021 by

Electric dirt bikes offer performance and safety advantages to younger riders. Rather than dealing with the noise and smell of petrol-run bikes, those of us who enjoy outdoor adventures are familiar with electric dirt bikes that allow kids to enjoy the moment. They can hear their competitors and enjoy laughing and shouting at each other as they round the track.

When racing the petrol 50cc’s, young riders experience trouble with trigger clutches and power bands. Parents find themselves running across the tracks to re-start a bike when their child falls. Let’s not forget the hot parts of the petrol bikes that pose an injury risk.

When you select electric dirt bikes for kids, you move them into the up-and-coming popularity of eco-friendly and safe competitive sports equipment. Here are the best electric dirt bikes for the younger set.

KTM SX-E 5

This mini electric dirt bike is comparable in size to the gas-powered KTM 50 SX. The launch of this bike was in Milan at the 2018 EICMA motorcycle show.

The bike has a 5-kilowatt motor powered by a pack of 84 separate lithium-ion battery cells and features six ride modes. Each mode provides different power options that adjust to fit the experience of the rider. The bike is ready to race mini crossover that satisfies beginners and competitors in the junior ride class.

With no sound pollution and zero admissions, KTM takes electric dirt bikes to the next level in competition racing. The permanent magnet air-cooled motor design is slim and extremely compact. A waterproof and dustproof layout makes the motor wear-free and maintenance-free.

The strong, lightweight frame combines optimum torsional rigidity with maximum longitudinal stiffness. A fibre-glass reinforced subframe with extruded plastic elements provides your child with a safe, durable ride.

Adjustable for growing children, there are two different seat height mounts.  Tapered NEKEN handlebars are manufactured from high-quality aluminum alloy for safety and stability.

The handlebars taper from 28mm in the center area, 22mm in the bends down to 18mm in the handhold area. It accommodates a thinner lock-on ODI grip on the left side. The throttle assembly on the right has a vulcanized ODI grip only available on the electric drive for better grip and control.

A handlebar crash pad provides additional protection to your child. They will love the modern graphics styled like the full-size motocross bikes.

The instrument panel shows the remaining battery life, so your child knows when to come in off the trail. The 48V BLDC motor charges 100% in 70 minutes and provides 5 kW and 3,900 rpm.

Husqvarna EE 5

The EE5 is Husqvarna’s first electric bike and adjusts to accommodate the younger set. Seat height can be adjusted between 24.2 inches to 26.2 inches. The battery fully charges in 70 minutes.

Safety features include 160mm disc brakes on both the rear and front. The electric motor rivals 50cc petrol models with a peak power output of 5 kW. This is equivalent to a 2-stroke model.

The magnet, the air-cooled motor, has a slim, compact design that allows for a smaller chassis. The motor is dustproof and waterproof, and being electric, it is basically maintenance-free, has low noise output, and zero carbon emissions. This quiet ride allows your child to practice their skills in backyards and other areas with noise emission restrictions.

A multifunctional instrument panel allows the young rider to choose from six different ride modes and power options. They are also able to check their remaining battery charge easily.

The frame of high-strength chromium-molybdenum steel maintains calculated parameters for torsional rigidity and longitudinal flex. This allows the bike to maintain stability and provides precise control when cornering.

The young rider obtains a better grip and less fatigue with the tapered handlebars that vary from 22mm to 28mm in the bends and 18mm at the grip.  A crash pad on the handlebars adds to rider safety, and the vulcanized ODI grip on the right side helps protect the rider.

Razor SX350 Dirt Rocket McGrath

This bike design is inspired by Jeremy McGrath, the best supercross rider of all time. Featuring adjustable-angle riser handlebars, a retractable kickstand, hand-operated rear brake, and spoked wheels with 12” pneumatic knobby tires make this a solid ride.

The bike’s recommendation for age is 13 years, with a top rider weight of 140 lbs. (63 kg). The 250W single-speed motor has a range of 7 miles or 30 minutes at a top speed of 14 mph (22.5 kph).  The 48.26 lb. (21.8 kg) frame makes it easy for young riders to maneuver.

An alternative is the SX500, designed for riders over 14 years and 175 lbs. (80 kg) in weight. It has twice the power at 500W variable speed and offers ride times of up to 40 minutes or 10 miles (16 km). A bit larger, the bike has 14” pneumatic tires and weighs 96.7 lbs. (43.8 kg).

Sur-Ron Light Bee S (LBS) Youth Electric Motocross Bike

This new youth version electric MX bike is patterned after their popular adult bikes. This bike is targeted toward those who are 10 years of age and older.

The bike features 17” wheels, a 48V removable lithium battery pack, and an MX suspension. This dirt bike is available in your child’s choice of three colours, blue, red, and black.

The factory-installed GPS tracker includes real-time tracking, geo-fence security zones, and theft alerts. You also have the ability to track the bike from your computer or smartphone. A 48V lithium battery pack is removable and provides up to 44 miles of riding at up to 31 mph.

Oset MX-10

This is the most dirt-bike type of electric motorcycle Oset produces for the youngest set. Built for riders age 4 to 7, the bike has a maximum weight of 88 lbs. (400kg). Weighing only 82 lbs. (37.2kg), the bike is easy to handle for youngsters who want to get started in dirt bike riding and participate in competitions.

Many young riders are afraid of the power of a petrol-powered bike. The MX-10 allows the speed, throttle, and power to be adjusted to accommodate the rider, giving them confidence and allowing the bike to grow with their abilities.

Working in unison, the OSET motor, OSET 20ah lithium battery, and controller combines with a 48v OSET drive system with 3-dial adjustability allow the youngest members of the motocross set to feel like their older competitors. The hydraulic disc brakes are easy to operate with reach-adjustable levers. Handlebars that have three settings between 31.7” to 32.1” (805-815mm) and an adjustable seat height from 20.3 “ to 21.7” (515-550 mm) allow even the youngest riders to ride and touch the ground comfortably.

There is no kick start with electric power, eliminating the need for parents to run out onto the track to restart the bike. There is no hot exhaust, so no risk of burning in a tumble. With a running time of 2-3 hours and a maximum speed of 35 mph, this bike is a great introduction to the off-road and motocross experience.

Oset 20.0 Racing MKII

This bike is built for riders 8 years and weighing a maximum of 110 lbs (50 kg). The bike operates on a 20AH 48V lithium battering that provides 2-3 hours of riding time. The exclusive 3-dial system allows parents to adjust the bike’s speed, power, and response characteristics according to the rider’s abilities.

The reduced body weight of this electric bike is 8 kg lighter than the lead-acid battery model. It also has a considerably longer running time of more than a day of trail riding or over three hours of off-road trails. The power and response are adjustable to the rider, and the suspension can be adjusted to rider weight and preferences.

A strong frame, padded chin guard on the steering stem, thin grips, and a magnetic lanyard cut-out switch provide safety. There is even a separate key switch that parents can easily remove if necessary. Standard is the OSET wide rear rim and a 3” wide, deep tread competition tire.

With a seat height of 21.6” (550mm) and handlebar height of 38.6” (980mm) and weighing only 34.7 kg with the battery, this is a perfect electric dirt bike for children. Your child will learn to develop dirt bike skills with confidence with no concerns about hot parts, gas, fumes, or noise.
